The Engine Man

Former Porsche Technician of the Year and founder of RSR Engineering, Russel Lewis is a living legend in Porsche motorsport circles. With a career beginning as an apprentice at Isleworth’s engine department under George Sneath, Russel quickly developed deep technical knowledge working on everything from 356s and four-cams to 917s and turbocharged 935s.

Russel’s five-year apprenticeship culminated in a string of top certifications, eventually leading him to compete – and win – national and international Technician of the Year titles. In the 1980s and 1990s, his work with Motortune and Porsche saw him become one of only ten Grade 1 technicians in the UK.

In 1982, Russel quietly launched RSR Engineering, a name that has since become synonymous with precision air-cooled Porsche engine and gearbox restoration. His understanding of Porsche’s flat-six engines, especially the 2.7 RS and the 915 gearbox, is unparalleled. Over the years, he’s worked on everything from Tour Auto 911s to rare Carrera Abarths and BPR-spec 968 Turbos.

Russel’s approach is hands-on, methodical, and backed by decades of Porsche factory insight. Today, although semi-retired, he continues to operate out of Camberley, offering bespoke consultancy and mechanical work for discerning Porsche owners.

We're proud to have Russel as a key part of the VANHAUEN RACING story. His experience, guidance, and engineering brilliance played a vital role in bringing 903 back to life.
